The Velvet Wave Care Standard
The signature beauty of The Velvet Wave lies in its definition and movement. Maintaining both requires consistent hydration, gentle detangling, and thoughtful styling.
Before cleansing, gently separate the hair into manageable sections. Detangle while damp and conditioned using your fingers or a wide-tooth comb, beginning at the ends and gradually working upward toward the weft. Avoid aggressive brushing, particularly when the hair is dry, as this may disturb the wave pattern and encourage unnecessary frizz or shedding.
Cleanse with a moisture-focused shampoo and lukewarm water. Allow the water and cleanser to travel downward through the hair rather than rubbing, twisting, or bunching the bundles together. Follow with a hydrating conditioner to replenish moisture and maintain softness and manageability.
Deep conditioning is recommended regularly, particularly following extended wear, heat styling, or chemical processing.
Preserving the Wave
Between wash days, lightly mist The Velvet Wave with water or a lightweight hydrating refresher when the pattern needs revitalizing. Gently reshape the waves using your fingers and allow them to settle naturally.
A lightweight leave-in conditioner may be used to maintain moisture, followed by a small amount of lightweight oil to help seal in hydration and enhance luster. For additional definition, apply a curl or wave mousse sparingly.
Avoid excessive use of heavy oils, butters, creams, and styling products. Product buildup can weigh down the hair, reduce movement, and soften the definition of the wave pattern.
Whenever possible, allow The Velvet Wave to air-dry naturally. If heat styling is desired, always apply a professional heat protectant and use the lowest effective temperature.
Nighttime Care
Before sleeping, gently detangle and loosely braid or secure the hair to help preserve the wave pattern. Protect the hair with a silk or satin bonnet or scarf. A silk or satin pillowcase may provide additional protection by reducing friction, tangling, dryness, and unnecessary stress on the hair.
Never sleep with the hair wet or excessively damp. Allow the hair to dry thoroughly before nighttime protection to help prevent tangling and matting.
Coloring & Customization
The Velvet Wave may be professionally lightened up to approximately Color #27. Professional coloring is strongly recommended, particularly when lightening the hair several levels.
Chemical processing can alter the original wave pattern, moisture balance, softness, and longevity of human hair. Hair that has been bleached or otherwise chemically customized may require more frequent conditioning and an enhanced maintenance routine.
